Making Art by Chance and Choice
Mixed media takes me away from the pressures of realism. It breaks from the academic dedication to accuracy that was my foundation in art school. Many of these in fact, start with the opposite. I draw blind. I'm drawing from life, but I won't look down until I'm done. And from that chaos, that pile of lines, I start to pull together an image. It starts with pen. Extra fine art pens. Then the washes of color, often with gouache. I add paper from whatever I have, my favorite being a literature textbook with deliciously thin pages and a beautiful font. If it fits, I like to add some kind of oddity, something to give a nod to my sense of humor or irony. Maybe it's a parking ticket.
